The Infant Jesus College of Arts and Science in Mulagumoodu, Kanniyakumari District, is a Catholic Minority College for women run by the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as ICM Sisters. It was started as a response to the appeal of the local people as well as the Congregation’s search for relevant and meaningful ministries that would empower the less privileged and the excluded groups in the society, women in particular.
The journey towards the birth of the College was long. It took six years of serious reflections, consultations and discernments at all levels to reach a decision. These were initiated by the then District Superior Sr. Rachel Oommen and her Council, and culminated in the approval by the General Team headed by Sr. Saveria Jeganathan, the Superior General. With the dynamic leadership of Sr. S. Dominic Mary and her Team, with endurance and determination to reach the goal, and with deep faith that if it is God’s mission it will come through, holding on to Truth and Christian values, all necessary requirements were obtained and was affiliated to the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University at Tirunelveli. On June 21, 2016, the Feast of our Mother Foundress, the College was blessed and inaugurated.

The congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Immaculati Cordis Mariae - ICM), is an International Congregation founded in Mulagumoodu on November 7, 1897 by Mother Marie Louise De Meester, a Belgian Roman Catholic Nun. She came to India on the invitation of a Belgian Carmelite Priest to care for the orphans in an already existing orphanage. Her deep desire to serve the poor got further reflected in organizing simple and illiterate women towards achieving economic empowerment through skill training, embroidery and lace making. Taking cognizance of the need for knowledge, empowerment and sustainable development of the downtrodden, she established a Primary School and a Teachers’ Training Institute at Mulagumoodu and practically demonstrated the positive development impact of socio-economic and spiritual interventions in communities. The Congregation gradually spread all over India and we are at present in the States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
After establishing the mission in India, she moved on to open new foundations. Now, the ICM Congregation is vibrantly working for the poor and needy in 17 countries all over the world in such fields as education, medical care, social service, advocacy, etc. The poor in their multi-culturality are at the centre and the heart of our mission.
